13 civilians shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Balkh

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Unidentified massacred more than a dozen civilians in northern Balkh province on Saturday, authorities said.

Several civilians were shot to death in Zare district before noon, deputy police chief for the province, Col. Abdul Razzaq Qadiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Although he did not put a specific figure on casualties, resident Habibullah claimed 13 people were killed in the shooting. He had no further details.

Meanwhile, the provincial council chairman said the incident occurred near the district centre. Mohammad Ibrahim Khairandesh said the gunmen in police uniforms disembarked the civilians from two vehicle.

The assailants, who let off a woman, shot dead 11 men. He blamed militants for the killings, but stopped short of saying which group the gunmen belonged to.
