Voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from April 3

Voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from April 3

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN refugee agency UNHCR-facilitated voluntary repatriation programme for registered Afghan refugees in Pakistaninfo-icon will resume on April 3.

Duniya Aslam Khan, UNHCR spokesperson in Islamabad, in an email told Pajhwok Afghan News the repatriation and reintegration grant for registered Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan in 2017 will be USD 200.

In light of financial constraints facing humanitarian operations worldwide, including UNHCR, the cash grant has been reduced from the amount of USD 400 in 2016.

“The decision of Afghans to return or not to return is their own choice. We help those who decide to return out of options available to them on where they can best find protection or solution to their long-standing plight,” Aslam Khan said.

She said since the return of registered Afghan refugees was voluntary, they facilitated all those who approached the refugee body.

“It is therefore too early to estimate how many refugees would return this year as we are just resuming our programme.”

In 2016, 370,000 registered Afghans returned under UNHCR’s voluntary repatriation programme.
