Repatriation of refugees from Pakistan begins today

Repatriation of refugees from Pakistan begins today

Apr 03, 2017 - 08:32

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistaninfo-icon resumes today (Monday), with 16,000 having applied for returning home from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A 50 percent reduction -- from $400 to $200 -- under the UNHCR’s repatriation programme may discourage the voluntary return of documented refugees after a winter break

The UNHCR says all registered refugees will be repatriated to their country in April and May. Around 1.3 million registered and a million undocumented refugees are living in Pakistan.

Officials say the repatriation this year was delayed for a month due to the closure of the border in February due to security concerns after a series of terrorist attacks killed 100 people.

UHCR spokesperson Dunya Khan says the refugee agency had made arrangements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces for the smooth repatriation of the Afghans.
