ISLAMABAD (Pajhwok): Afghan refugees living in Pakistaninfo-icon’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday said the ‘refugee card’ had no benefit except their identification.

The refugees, who had gathered in Kohat town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urged the Pakistani government to provide them needed facilities under the card.

The gathering in Kohat was arranged by the Afghan Refugees Consultative Council. Muallim Wilayat Khan, the council head, told the gathering that the Pakistani government had issued them refugee cards for their identification.

He said the government should provide them needed facilities to refugees who held the cards like opening a bank account, stay in hotels, driving license and boarding domestic flights.

Khan’s deputy, Abdul Rahman Afghanyar, said they had shared the issue with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Islamabad through a letter.

He said in the letter, the UNHCR office had been asked to talk with the Pakistani government about facilities for documented Afghan refugees.

But UNHCR head in Islamabad Abdul Hamid Jalili told Pajhwok Afghan News Pakistan could not provide facilities to the Afghans based on the refugee card.

“With the cards, we have just allowed the Afghans to live in Pakistan, we have promised no other facility in the card.”

Jalili asked the Afghan refugees in Pakistan to voluntarily return to their home country and take part in Afghanistaninfo-icon’s rebuilding.

Last year, Pakistan sent 0.7 million registered and unregistered Afghan families to Afghanistan.
