Chickenpox breaks out in Nangarhar, patients increasing

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Public healthinfo-icon officials on Wednesday reported an outbreak of the chickenpox virus, saying the number of patients in four districts of eastern Nangarhar province has been on the increase.

The officials also said they had launched a vaccination campaign to control the varicella virus in children in Lalpura, Chaparhar, Kama and Behsud districts.

Local residents said they were concerned about the increasing number of children contracting the disease

Vaccination program head in Nangarhar Dr. Jan Mohammad told Pajhwok Afghan News the number of chickenpox patients had declined as a result of the ongoing vaccination campaign.

“This is called an outbreak, when more than five children in the same village are infected with the disease, so we launched the vaccination campaign to control the situation.”

According to the Nangarhar public health department, 2472 people, mostly children, were infected with the virus last solar yearinfo-icon that ended on March 21.

Residents of remote areas said they were concerned about the chickenpox outbreak and urged the government to increase its efforts at controlling the disease.

A tribal elder in Lalpura district, Haji Sultan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that he had no exact figures to share about the number of patients in the district but four children and one woman in his home were infected with the virus.
