FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): A three-day polio vaccination campaign targeting overall 208,000 children under the age of five years was launched in western Farah province on Monday.

Local officials and representatives from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Worldinfo-icon Healthinfo-icon Organisation (WHO) attended a ceremony marking the launch of the anti-polio campaign in Farah city, the provincial capital.

Deputy Governor Mohammad Younus Rasooli, and provincial council member Gul Ahmad Faqiri called upon tribal elders, religious scholars and insurgents to support polio workers in making the drive a success.

The vaccination drive is part of the nationwide spring polio campaign launched on March 27 this year. Only one positive case of polio surfaced in Farah in 2015 and since then no case has been detected.

Twenty polio cases were recorded across the country in 2015, 13 in 2016 and three emerged during the ongoing year. One case was diagnosed in Kandahar, one in Helmand and one in Kunduz.

Afghanistaninfo-icon, Pakistaninfo-icon, and Nigeria are three countries on global level where polio virus still exists, but Afghanistan has been close to fully eliminating the virus.
