MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): A school for girls has opened in the Tagab district of central Kapisa province after more than a decade and a half, an official said on Friday.

Educationinfo-icon Director Mohammad Nasim told Pajhwok Afghan News the school, which was set up as a result of efforts by tribal elders, started functioning in Shinkai area on Thursday.

“I spoke to the Talgab elders and later arranged their meeting with the governor. This year, we were able to establish the school. Area elders are guarding the school,” he said.

Fifty girls are currently enrolled in the school, the first to be set up in the area after 16 years, the director said, hoping the number would rise. The school housed in a private residence has five teachers.

An independent building for the school would be constructed within a year, the official promised, indicating lady teachers in Tagab would be offered higher salaries than their counterparts in other districts.

Resident Ahmad Khalid recalled two girls’ schools had been established in the Qurghal area of Tagab in the early years of Hamid Karzai’s presidency. However, both were destroyed by militants.
