Kama teachers seek immediate release of colleagues

Kama teachers seek immediate release of colleagues

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Teachers in the Kama district of eastern Nangarhar province on Friday demanded the immediate release of their colleagues and distribution of land plots to them.

A number of schoolteachers were arrested late on Thursday when they tried to distribute state-owned land to themselves. They also traded punches with the security personnel.

At a meeting in Kama, dozens of teachers asked the authorities to set free their colleagues without any delay and resolve their housing problem with a sense of urgency.

One of the teachers, Malyar, told Pajhwok Afghan News the government not only shied away from distributing plots to them, but also resorted to mistreating the community.

About yesterday’s incident, he said police started beating the teachers with rifle butts as they demanded the allotment of land plots.

On the other hand, Nangarhar governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani denied police had beaten the teachers. Instead, he claimed, the teachers misbehaved with the security personnel.

He said the governor had dispatched a team led by deputy police chief Amir Khan Lewal to the area. Some teachers were detained after they misbehaved with the police officials, he added.

Khogyani made clear the detainees would not be released as long as all teachers of the district did not agree to hold talks with the government on the issue.  He promised land plots for teachers in another area.
