Girls’ school set alight; Taliban deny involvement

Girls’ school set alight; Taliban deny involvement

May 18, 2017 - 14:05

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen have set a girls school on fire in the Pashtunkot district of northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Thursday.

Educationinfo-icon Director Ghulam Sakhi Bayan confirmed the incident, saying gunmen torched the school in Khawaja Namusi area controlled by the Talibaninfo-icon.

Over 1, 200 students were enrolled in the school, which was recently constructed. The official had no idea who the arsonists were.

“On my way to the mosqueinfo-icon for Fajar prayer, I saw the school on fire. Some Taliban came to the site and questioned the guard. They also traced the footprints of individuals who had set the school building light,” he said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the burning of the school. Taliban’s key leader in Faryab said burning schools was the handiwork of groups to defame the movement.
