Enough sleep central to positive mood, mental strength

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Sleep has wonderful effects, making you feel better, boosting your mood and giving you strength, says a noted religious scholar.

Islam, a complete code of life for Muslims, also sets store by rest and sleep. In the Quraninfo-icon, Allah says: “And we made your sleep (subaat) as a thing for rest.”

Maulviinfo-icon Shams Rahman Frotan, a scholar, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Rest gives strength to humans; people forget their woes and find mental and physical respite by sleeping.”

According to him, Allah almighty in the Quran said, “It is He who made the night so that you can rest in it and the daylight so that you can see there truly.”

People might get tired because of work and they may face serious mental problems if they do not sleep. The medical worldinfo-icon, inspired by the Islamic principles, has also discovered that human healthinfo-icon and strength mostly flows from enough snooze.

Additionally, psychological studies show all creatures need rest. However, it is more vital for humans to stay healthy and fresh.

Dr. Syed Najibullah Javed, a mental health specialist at the Kabul Psychiatric Hospital, said that sleeping meant living and life was not possible without sleep.

Human life is divided into three categories -- two related to sleep and a third to wakefulness, he said, adding rest was one of the main needs of humans.

“Studies show sleep is a phenomenon inseparable from life; it has an important role in keeping people normal,” Javid observed.

Rest also helps people perform their duties effectively, according to the doctor, who said the sleep duration was varied based on ages. A normal human need six to nine hours of sleep in 24 hours but this is different about children, he added.

Some psychologists say sleep soothes anger, impatience, sadness and illness. Zakarya Barakzai, a psychology lecturer at Kabul University, said sleep brought mental and physical relaxation to humans.

There were amazing secrets of sleep, including positive physiological changes, reduced heartbeat and decreased body, he explained, believing people with regular schedule and right sleeping habits rested well and did not have bad dreams.

Sound sleep keeps the mind active and strong, improve human strength, reduce stress and strengthen the immune system, he said.

Zubair, 28, a Kabul-based private university student, also called sleep important for health. He called it a blessing of God.

“I have good sleep, follow my schedule and sleep eight hours daily. I do not let my sleep schedule being disturbed.” He could not do his daily work well when he does not sleep enough.

Nazanin, 30, a private organization worker, said she had been sleeping less than six hours a day. Fatigue and impatience was the reason why she was sleeping less.

“My doctor suggested me to sleep more for better mental health,” she said, adding she her tiredness and headache were relieved after she acted the doctor’s advice.
