Ghani, Guterres talk terrorism, peace process

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN secretary general vehemently denounced recent terrorist attacks in Kabul, calling terrorism a common enemy, the Presidential Palace said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Antonio Guterres arrived in Kabul on an unscheduled visit. He met national unity government leaders and UN officials in the country.

He is in Kabul for the first time after assuming office to express solidarity with the people of Afghanistan for peace, stability and development.

During a meeting, President Ashraf Ghani thanked the UN chief for his visit to show solidarity with the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon in the difficult hour.

Both leaders discussed different subjects, specially the peace process, terrorism regional and international issues, a statement from Ghani’s office said.

During his recent meeting with the Pakistani prime minister, Ghani said, they agreed to utilise the Quadrilateral Cooperation Group (QCG) platform for peace and stability.

In recent years, he added, Afghanistan had strengthened economic links with Central Asian republics and Iran. New opportunities of trade and commerce were being explored, he continued.

The UN secretary general reiterated the worldinfo-icon body’s commitment to standing by Afghanistan in future and supporting government strategies for peace and reforms in the system.
