KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The European Union on Monday urged the Afghan government to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence in the country.

EU Special Representative Franz-Michael Mellbin issued the call on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.

In 2014, 44 incidents of sexual violence against womeninfo-icon and girls were recorded in Afghanistaninfo-icon -- 8 against children and 7 committed by members of security forces.

"Sexual violence in conflict continues to be used as a tactic of war and terror. It targets particularly women and girls, but in some cases under-aged boys,” he said.

In a statement, the diplomat asked the government to increase efforts to eliminate conflict-related sexual violence in the country.

“All Afghans must make it a priority to protect women, girls and under-aged boys and respect human rights," Mellbin added, encouraging the Afghans to report all cases of sexual violence.
